Claire Louise

June 2008

How quickly a week goes by! I can't believe Claire has been here for a week already. Her birth story was pretty uneventful. Wednesday night we went out to dinner with friends and I just had this weird feeling that something wasn't right. Thursday morning I woke up around 4 AM having contractions. I started timing them out and they were pretty evenly spaced between 6 and 8 minutes apart. Dan pretty much slept through all of them until around 7. I was able to get back to sleep at 7:30 and Dan stayed home from work. Around noon I finally called the doctors office and they told me to head to the hospital. By the time I was checked at the hospital I was 3 cm dilated and they called my doctor who decided to admit me. I quickly dilated to 5 cm and the doctor broke my water and I got the epidural (who in their right mind would pass this up?)! I continued to progress with the dilation and the doctor went home to grab a nap. The nurse called him back around 9:30 PM and told him to head back to the hospital because I was ready to go. He checked me at 10:15 and decided I wasn't quite ready to push so we waited another hour. Luckily I was still feeling nothing so I didn't really mind. The pushing began at 11:15 PM and she was born at 1:43 on Friday morning - 7 lb 5 oz and 20 inches long.

Unfortunately, everything took a little longer than expected because Miss Claire was facing up and didn't want to come out. After all was said and done, they ended up vacuum extracting her. I think they were anxious to get her out because she had a bowel movement inside, which apparently isn't good. I got to hold her right away before they began suctioning her lungs. They worked on her in the room for a bit before they handed her off to Dan. Then she was sent back to the nursery for some more clearing of the lungs and respiratory PT. They wheeled me in to see her around 4 AM as we were heading to our room. I was so exhausted I couldn't even keep my eyes open!

Friday morning Pipere and Grandma came back to hold Miss Claire for the first time. Friday afternoon Auntie Andrea got there and Friday night Auntie Kristin arrived. We had a nice stay in the hospital until we headed home early Sunday afternoon.

Now we are all settled in at home and have appreciated all the help we have had. Tonight, Dan and I got to go to dinner while Grandma babysat Claire. Claire has been an excellent sleeper and we hope this trend continues. I guess time will tell. Time that is passing way too quickly....

The Free's:  Natalie was in the same position and I stalled at 8cm because of it. They went in and manually turned her (OUCH!). I hate that they had to use the vacuum but I am glad that everything worked out in the end. 2.5 hours of pushing...you go girl! She is beautiful!!!!

This is Auntie Andrea posting for Meredith as she is a little busy at the hospital!!! She starting having contractions around 4AM and went to the hospital before noon today. She has had her epideryl <sp?> and isn't in too much pain. She was in good spirits when we last talked but she said she was FREEZING!!!! She is expecting to meet CHS late tonight or early tomorrow morning. Grandma Robillard and Pipere are probably at the hospital by now - she obviously wanted to meet her Pipere before he leaves for Germany but didn't care as much that Auntie Andrea had just finished a 7 hour drive for a vacation at the beach for with her friends for the weekend!!!

We're back on track! Blood pressure is still good at 120/80 and her heart rate is nice and strong at 139 bpm. No swelling at all - I am still wearing my rings! Weight was down 1 lb bringing the total weight gain to 18 lb - not too bad! The important thing is I am now 90% effaced and 1 cm dilated. They still wouldn't be surprised if I go late, but at least something is happening. I have my last appointment next Tuesday and if nothing more has happened it will be our choice if we want to go ahead with the induction.

They said again that we are having an average sized baby. It doesn't appear that this baby has Dan's height genes as her legs are measuring a couple of days shorter than I am pregnant. And her stomach is measuring two days ahead of me. It is amazing that they can measure all these things while she is still inside. Time will tell how accurate they are.

We are ready to meet this little girl, but hoping she holds off a little longer so Pipere can get in his trip to Germany - or at least some of it!

That's all for now...I hope everyone is having a good week! I am off to get a manicure and pedicure...

Well, we didn't get the most encouraging news from the doctor today. There has been no progress from last week to this week (other than another 2 lb weight gain!). The doctor said that in his opinion I will be delivering late and possibly facing induction if things don't progress along. Gail - I will be calling with lots of questions as the date gets closer!! Apparently they don't like to let you go more than a week past your due date, but we will see what happens. I can't really say that I am surprised considering I have not felt a single contraction of any sort. But, the doctor reminded me that gravity helps so I will be trying to get out for more walks.

However, there is one good thing that would come out of me being late. Pipere will be traveling overseas to Germany until the 28th so he would be back. And I guess I should consider more paid time off work a good thing :-)!

    Comments:
becky:  Don, that last part of your comment was terrible!
Yolanda:  Looks like the baby is just like her mama, late for everything! Just kidding, Meredith! I was just checking the page to see if the baby came yet....I hope it will be soon! Thankfully it is a bit cooler this week! Good luck! XO, Yolanda
Lori and Natalie:  Don't listen to them! Everyone thought I was going to go early...HA! With Natalie I didn't have ANY indication that I was going to go into labor. One day I just started having contractions about 10 minutes apart and she was born the next day. Hang in there, we are almost there. I have an appointment in about an hour and a half.
Peggy and Don:  No worries. Dan was 2 weeks late and Peggy thinks Dave was 2 weeks late too. I say Dave was right on time. Anyway, all will work out fine. Have some castor oil when you get to the due date. This old wives tale probably won't work. But the taste will be rotten and it will clean you out like a can of refried beans!!! You'll finally be able to put Dan to shame!
Cindy:  Hi Meredith, Just enjoy the time you have now, I think she is waiting for Pipere to return, rest all you can....She will be here before you know it..Love
beth:  i was 4 centimeters are 37 weeks and still had to be induced. my friend was no centimeters and still went into natural labor about about 40 weeks. no she had a really long labor b/c she had a long way to go. but that's ok. did they strip your membranes? ask them next time if they will. it didn't work for me but it works for many people. there are also alot of "old wives tales" that can work. if you have any questions about induction, feel free to email me. i'll be honest. hehe!

So we had our ultrasound this morning and everything looks good. The technician says CHS is 7lb 4oz give or take a pound (I am praying for the take!). She should gain an average of .5 lb each week that we have left. We will find out soon enough how accurate the ultrasound was! We got one picture but you can't see much since she is so big so I am not even going to bother posting it.

Other than that, things have been quiet here. We spent last weekend in Morristown with Andrea. She wanted a new TV so Dan helped her pick it out and set it up. I sat in the car complaining most of the time :-) they should have left me home! I don't think pregnant women should be allowed outside when it is over 95 degrees. That also means I have tried to stay inside as much as possible yesterday and will do the same today.

Tomorrow we head back to the doctors and it should be an interesting day at home because they will be working on a common water pipe in the building and there will be no running water from 9AM - 5PM. I don't think that mixes will with a woman who is 38 weeks pregnant! :-) That might be just the excuse I need to go visit Andrea at the Hyatt!

Look for another update tomorrow after our doctors appointment!

    Comments:
Uncle Ray:  After all this tension I hope Dan gets a chance to get away and unwind.
We pray all goes well for this memorable event.
    Love-
paula robillard:  Glad to hear everything is going smooth..(well sort of) Andrea and Dan are supposed to take care of you ...Love Yu..Auntie Paula
Don:  Coming right along. Love the pictures of the nursery and the cradle in the bedroom. So I need to understand where my room will be on trips to Asia and Europe. Oh, that's why you got the new couch... Ha! Good luck with the doctor's appointment today. Thanks for keeping us posted on the ultrasound yesterday.
Andrea:  You forgot to mention how Dan and I double checked that you wanted to come with us before we left and you chose to come....we aren't always the bad guys!!! Hope your appointment goes well tomorrow - Mom will be jealous that we are going to Delta's for dinner - she loved it!
Marissa:  The ultrasound tech's word is DEFINITELY not gospel. After 2 extra ultrasounds they were telling me Emma was going to be a very big baby and she ended up being 6 lbs. 10 oz. Hopefully baby Snider will be a good healthy size, but not too big!!!

One more doctors appointment down and things are still looking good. I can blame my 2 lb weight gain over the last 2 weeks on the fact that I am on maternity leave and not walking as much as I used to. Still not too bad considering my total gain is 17 lbs. Blood pressure still looks good and her HR was 153 bpm. The strep test came back negative which makes me happy - no antibiotics for me! Not too much progression from my appointment two weeks ago - I am now 75% effaced but not dilated yet. That's all fine with me.

We have an ultrasound scheduled next week for size and positioning. The doctor said they can estimate the weight fairly accurately within 1/2 lb. But, he also said, "Meredith, if you're carrying a big baby I don't know where you are hiding her!" Let's keep our fingers crossed that her size takes after Mommy and NOT her Daddy.

Everything else is coming together. Her cradle is all set up in our bedroom and the nursery is done. I have her last load of new clothes in the wash right now and I have picked out an outfit for her to wear home from the hospital (I know - VERY important!). Now all we need to do is pack our hospital bag, get the car seat installed and checked, and finally meet this precious little girl. How exciting...

    Comments:
Lori and Natalie:  FUN!!! Hard to believe how close we are isn't it? I have an appointment today at 4:15. Hoping they are going to tell me I am 8cm. hahaha
Cindy:  Oh my it's so close... Can't wait....Love
Andrea:  If you're done with the nursery put up more pictures already!!!! And I'm hoping for anytime on or past your due date so I can still go to the beach with everyone :)
Peggy S:  I'm excited for you. Sounds like everything is ready. I'm still hoping for CHS' debut is on the 10th!
